AI Edu+: Revolutionizing DSE Economics with Smart AI Assessment

HKDSE Economics preparation often involves extensive drill-and-practice, with students working through past papers again and again. Yet for many students, the challenge is not simply understanding the concepts but recognizing where they are going wrong and why. Teachers face a similar constraint: limited classroom time makes it difficult to respond to every student’s individual learning needs.
To address this, the EdTech team AI Edu+ has combined its expertise in economics education with artificial intelligence to develop an online assessment system platform that helps students identify learning gaps and prepare for exams with more confidence.
Putting Education First Through Innovative Technology
AI Edu+ is one of the EdTech teams supported by The CUHK Business School GBA Youth Entrepreneurship Support Scheme, BESGO FoundRise. Driven by a strong background in economics education and a forward-looking vision for EdTech, former CUHK Professor Michael Fung Ka-yiu teamed up with young members Leo Chen and Andrew Cheng. They combined the structured logic of experienced educators with AI to make economics more accessible and engaging.
The team had observed that many candidates fall into a passive cycle of working through practice papers and checking answer keys. While this may build familiarity with exam formats, it does not always help students recognise the conceptual or logical errors behind their mistakes. After hours of revision, some still struggle to identify where their real weaknesses lie. Teachers face a similar challenge: in large classes, limited time makes it difficult to respond to individual learning gaps across different topics.
To tackle these critical challenges in education, the team developed an AI-powered diagnostic system designed to identify patterns in student performance and support more targeted learning. The platform uses data analysis to build a diverse question bank and regularly incorporates current social and livelihood issues into economics exercises. Topics such as the low-altitude economy and Hong Kong’s public transport fare concession scheme are linked to core economic concepts, helping students connect what they learn in class with developments in the wider world.
Relieving Teacher Burnout and Supporting Inclusive Education
From business perspective, AI Edu+ is pursuing a dual-track B2B2C strategy. For schools and teachers, the platform is positioned as an efficient AI-enabled teaching support tool. By reducing the time spent on tasks such as preparing assessments and grading, it allows teachers to focus more on guiding and supporting students while also reducing the barriers to adopting digital learning tools in schools.
At the same time, the team is enhancing its personalized learning features in response to the growing number of private HKDSE candidates. It plans to expand into the direct-to-student market, offering candidates in Mainland China and overseas a more flexible and self-directed alternative to traditional private tutoring.
Bridging Online Tools with Offline Learning
The summer camp invited other BESGO FoundRise EdTech teams, SmartQuest and WriteRightGBA to share their experiences in AI entrepreneurship.
In early July, AI Edu+ co-oraganised five-day “Future Responsible Business Leaders Summer Academy” with BESGO and the E-Academy of Economics. The programme brought together more than 100 secondary school teachers and students. During the programme, participants used the AI Edu+ platform to analyse real business scenarios and prepare presentation slides within a limited timeframe, giving students hands-on experience with tertiary learning.
The summer camp covered topics including local economic development, tourism, entrepreneurship, AI innovation, and digital marketing through guest lectures and student presentations. During the lectures, students used the AI Edu+ platform to input strategic prompts and perspectives derived from guest talk to execute case studies. The platform enabled students to synthesize findings and construct presentation decks under time constraints, culminating in final group presentations.
Looking Ahead: Expanding Access to Smart Learning
AI Edu+’s product architecture and business roadmap always put Student- and Educator-Centric at its core. Automating routine administrative tasks like preparation and assessment frees educators to focus on classroom interaction, while students receive precise, personalized guidance. By addressing corporate social responsibility, the initiative advances digital inclusion through competitive, low-barrier pricing, ensuring lower-income students retain equal access to learning resources.
On the long-term, AI Edu+ aims to harness the Greater Bay Area’s supply chain strengths and Hong Kong’s international academic network to optimize its multilingual platform for global curricula. Supported by CUHK Business School’s ecosystem, the team continues to forge connections with schools, educational authorities, and industry leaders to build market credibility across Hong Kong and international markets.
AI Edu+ keeps students and teachers at the centre of its product development and business strategy. By supporting time-consuming tasks such as preparing teaching materials and grading, the platform helps reduce teachers’ administrative workload and allows them to focus more on classroom interaction and student support. At the same time, students can receive more targeted and personalised learning guidance, with the platform kept affordable to ensure that those from less advantaged backgrounds are not excluded from digital learning resources.
Looking ahead, the team plans to further develop its multilingual platform and expand into different international curricula, supported by the Greater Bay Area’s industry strengths and Hong Kong’s international academic outlook. Through CUHK’s network, AI Edu+ is also building connections with local schools, education organisations and industry partners, while gradually developing practical use cases and credibility in Hong Kong’s education sector.
Ultimately, AI Edu+ is not simply rethinking how students prepare for exams; it is exploring how technology can reshape the learning experience itself — making it more responsive, inclusive and centred on the people it is meant to serve.
